A 13N-Ammonia PET/CT Scan is a nuclear medicine imaging test used primarily to assess myocardial perfusion, which is the blood flow to the heart muscle. It involves injecting a radiotracer called nitrogen-13 ammonia (13N-ammonia) into the bloodstream. This tracer is taken up by the heart muscle cells in proportion to the blood flow. A PET scanner detects the gamma rays emitted by the tracer, while a CT scanner provides detailed anatomical images. This combined imaging technique is useful for diagnosing coronary artery disease, evaluating the extent of myocardial ischemia, and assessing the viability of heart tissue.
