18F-FET PET/CT Scan

An 18F-FET PET/CT Scan is a specialized nuclear medicine imaging test used to evaluate brain tumors. It involves injecting a radiotracer called 18F-fluoroethyl-L-tyrosine (FET) into the bloodstream. FET is an amino acid analog that accumulates in tumor cells, reflecting their increased protein synthesis. A PET scanner detects the gamma rays emitted by the tracer, while a CT scanner provides detailed anatomical images. This combined imaging technique is particularly useful for diagnosing, grading, and monitoring brain tumors, helping to differentiate between tumor tissue and normal or necrotic tissue, and guiding treatment planning.
