18F-FMISO PET/CT Scan

An 18F-FMISO PET/CT Scan is a specialized nuclear medicine imaging test used to detect and evaluate tissue hypoxia (low oxygen levels) in tumors. It involves injecting a radiotracer called 18F-fluoromisonidazole (FMISO) into the bloodstream. This tracer selectively accumulates in hypoxic cells. A PET scanner detects the gamma rays emitted by the tracer, while a CT scanner provides detailed anatomical images. This combined imaging technique helps in assessing tumor hypoxia, which is important for planning and monitoring treatments such as radiotherapy and for predicting tumor aggressiveness and treatment resistance.
