A Renal Scan (DMSA) is a nuclear medicine imaging test used to evaluate kidney structure and function. It involves injecting a radiotracer called DMSA (dimercaptosuccinic acid) into the bloodstream, which is absorbed by the functioning renal tissue. A gamma camera captures detailed images of the kidneys, highlighting areas of normal and abnormal tissue. This scan is particularly useful for detecting renal scarring, congenital abnormalities, and assessing differential renal function. It is commonly used in pediatric patients to diagnose and monitor conditions such as pyelonephritis and vesicoureteral reflux.
