Parathyroid (Sestamibi) Scan

A Parathyroid (Sestamibi) Scan with SPECT/CT is a nuclear medicine imaging test used to locate overactive parathyroid glands. It involves injecting a radiotracer called sestamibi into the bloodstream, which is preferentially taken up by overactive parathyroid tissue. The SPECT component captures functional images by detecting gamma rays emitted from the radiotracer, while the CT component provides detailed anatomical images. When combined, SPECT/CT offers precise localization and characterization of abnormal parathyroid glands, aiding in the diagnosis and surgical planning for conditions such as primary hyperparathyroidism.
