Sentinel Lymph Node Scan

A Sentinel Lymph Node Scan is a nuclear medicine procedure used to identify the first lymph node(s) that drain lymphatic fluid from a primary tumor site, known as sentinel lymph nodes. This scan involves injecting a small amount of radioactive tracer near the tumor. A gamma camera then tracks the tracer as it moves through the lymphatic system, highlighting the sentinel lymph nodes. This procedure helps determine the spread of cancer, guiding surgeons in biopsy or removal of these nodes during surgery. It is commonly used in cases of breast cancer and melanoma, aiding in accurate staging and treatment planning.
