It involves injecting a radiotracer called 18F-fluoroestradiol (FES) into the bloodstream, which binds to estrogen receptors on cancer cells. A PET scanner detects the gamma rays emitted by the tracer, while a CT scanner provides detailed anatomical images. This combined imaging technique helps in assessing ER status, aiding in the diagnosis, staging, and treatment planning of ER-positive breast cancer, and evaluating response to hormone therapy.
